Technorati Tagging for Blogger

Having read Ivan's suggestions to Technorati on improving the tagging process, I thought I'd share a little "trick" on Blogger to save time when tagging blogs.

Step 1: Login to Blogger and go to "Change Settings".
Step 2: Go to the "Settings" tab.
Step 3: Choose the "Formatting" sub-tab.
Step 4: Scroll all the way down to the "Post Template" area and insert the following HTML code.

<span style="font-size:0;">
Technorati tag:
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/yc" rel="tag">YC</a>
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/singapore" rel="tag">Singapore</a>
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/privacy" rel="tag">Privacy</a>
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/security" rel="tag">Security</a>
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/technorati" rel="tag">Technorati</a>
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/" rel="tag"></a>
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/" rel="tag"></a>
</span>

This has two effects on your blogs. Firstly, it creates a template of your regularly used tags i.e. just delete away what you don't intend to use before you post. Secondly, the span field hides your technorati tags to the casual viewer.

So until Technorati adds a "taglet" or Firefox comes up with a new extension, you can use this workaround to get about the tagging process. It'll be a little less painful for Blogger users.

  • Yup, you're right. I use this blogger feature myself actually. It'll work for existing tags or frequently-used tags. But for tags that I'm not familiar with, I'd still have to check with Technorati.

    Hey, neat trick with hiding the tags... but come to think of it, there's more advantages to displaying your tags than hiding them. It allows other readers to know how the post is tagged, for instance, and they may use the same tag later.

  • For tags that I'm unfamiliar with, I just tag what I deem appropriate! :) Technology will sort out the discrepancies eventually when "smarter" engines are introduced.

    As an example, take a look at the technorati tags for funny, humor and humour. Funny and Humour point to the other two tags, but Humor points to neither!

    My method is not orderly (yes, I hear you cringing!), but it gives readers the opportunity of reading the blogger's psychic (e.g. satire to someone may be banal humor to another).

    Should technorati introduce taglets, we could also have a tag voting system in place to better classify a blog according to both author and readers' views.

    Some food for thought.

  • Now that's worth considering -- a "voting system". Actually, it could be automated. E.g. when you submit a tag, Technorati could suggest similar tags, like "200 people tagged like this..."

  • For a moment, I thought you said Technorati suggests 200 similar tags! But that's a distinct possibility depending on how diverse one's readership is.

    Actually, I was alluding to how blogshares and to a limited sense, how slashdot comments works. Something along that line anyway.
